5 smart decorating ideas to enhance your kid's bedroom

Category Home owners tips

Looking for small bedroom ideas for kids? Small children's rooms can be a challenge when it comes to decorating. Sometimes the room is so small and gets easily cluttered that it is hard for your child to do their homework.

Planning a successful child's bedroom scheme depends on plenty of forward-thinking. Good storage, multi-functional furniture that serves a child's changing needs, and imaginative décor are all key.

Before you start looking at where to put assorted furniture, empty the room and locate the perfect spot for the bed. This will either be a single or perhaps slightly shorter junior bed or, at a squeeze, a three-quarter size bed. You will need to make sure that there is enough space on one or both sides of the bed to move around, but keep in mind that, if pushed against one wall, you won't need any space at the top or the bottom of the bed.

In a room where the bed fits tightly into a particular space, consider the options for a fitted bed or a custom bed that is designed to fit into the available space. Bunk beds have long been the go-to solution for making the most out of a shared space.

In a small room built-in storage can be a life saver in making sure the room feels spacious for your child, but still fits all their belongings in. When fitting a built-in wardrobe along one wall, leave a small cut out for a slim laptop desk. This will help leave the desk clear so there is plenty of space for them to do their homework.

It is important to make use of all the wall space so that you can keep the floor as free as possible. The space over the bed is often only used for wall art and stickers, but double this up as extra storage by placing a peg rail over it. Your child will be able to grab their dressing gown as soon as they step out of bed.

Small rooms can become easily overwhelmed by clutter and busy colour, leaving them feeling cramped. For this reason, it pays to keep a compact space white, but this doesn't mean colour and pattern can't be used to add fun and character. Window treatments and bedding are the perfect vehicles for colourful scenes and patterns, and will bring the bed and blinds or curtains into sharp relief in a white room.

A small bedroom does not mean you have to skimp on creativity. Imaginative play can help bring a sense of fun and fantasy to a child's bedroom. Keep some role-play toys, such as mini-kitchens and shops, within reach, so children can spontaneously decide when to use them. If your space is tight, choose a wallpaper in which they can express their unabridged creativity.
